Three months have flown by without a single post. Since the end of June I have had my grand baby, her mother and father staying with me and taking up all my precious time. That time spent with them is the best. I have had no desire to write or post. The camera has been going non stop since they have moved back to the valley....mostly of Sienna...of course!
So I have been thinking about this blog and whether I want to continue it. Keira has mentioned my lack of posting and how she missed it. I have decided that I will restart but with a different content. I am going to change it to a Photo Of The Day blog as photography is my current passion. I will try to post a new photo on a daily basis...just one...and I promise they will not all be of Sienna. Stay tuned as this is all going to start...tomorrow!

Let me introduce to you my newest pride and joy.

Sienna Lynn Mellis
Laura brought this bundle into the world on April 3rd. 2009 after a relatively short labor. Sienna is 7lbs. 4 oz. and about 20 inches long. She has her mother's chin, eyes and lips. She has her father's ears and blonde hair. She is absolutely beautiful!

My son will make the most amazing father. He is already doting on his little princess. He even slept in the hospital the first night so mama could get some sleep. Yesterday afternoon they brought her home!

She looks so content in her own home in the arms of her daddy. She is wearing her special coming home outfit from her mommy and daddy and is wrapped in two blankets, one from her Auntie Keira and one from Oma.

I have yet to meet her and already have an overwhelming love for our special little girl. Laura and Trevor....you done good!

The little Aries is something of a handful. This energetic child will walk and run as soon as possible and perform daring feats of exploration. Any caregivers will need to be vigilant, since this small individual does not know the meaning of fear and is especially prone to head injuries. Many children born under this sign appear hyperactive and easily frustrated when they cannot get their own way. Since they are always in a rush to get on with life, they are prone to violent temper tantrums and dramatic physical displays. Nevertheless, the natural enterprise and curiosity of the Aries child does need to be encouraged and it is important to place as few restrictions on this little one as possible. Explain to the Aries child...reason with the Aries child...but never complain. Persuade the little Aries to take up a hobby which requires the development of patience, for those born under this Sign are the least patient of the Zodiac and will need such self-control later in life.
The Aries child loves to take things apart and may break toys easily. With encouragement, however, he or she will develop formidable coordination. The bossy tendencies of this little one should be molded into leadership qualities rather than allowed to become bullying in nature. Otherwise, the "me first" Aries will have many clashes with other strong-willed youngsters. Since the Aries child is usually vocal in expressing needs, any caregiver should have no problem in discerning what this little character most desires. The key emphasis should be on helping this child to control his or her temper and develop self-discipline and respect for authority. It is important to be vigilant, but the Aries child must be allowed plenty of space. It is also important to emphasize good manners and consideration for others in order to help the willful little Aries to get along socially with playmates. Aries children should be persuaded to take out their aggressions and frustrations in active, competitive sports. Indeed, this is where they usually excel.
Essentially a direct and uncomplicated individual, the little Aries rarely suffers from hidden anxieties or psychological difficulties. However, stimulation and a sense of achievement are vital to this child. Without these two things, this little one can easily turn into an extremely difficult child to live with. Blessed with deep resources of determination, the Aries child is able to face any challenge, but does tend to act before thinking. Since he or she will be passionate about absolutely everything which is of personal importance, there is liable to be a great reluctance to share. There may also be a tendency to make loud and/or unkind remarks about a playmate. Unfortunately, the Aries child will rarely consider such behavior to be selfish, perceiving this as nothing more than an assertive right to do and say as he or she pleases. As a general rule, Aries children with younger siblings learn to deal with their inherent selfishness much better than those who are only children or who happen to be the "baby" of the family.
Blessed with a retentive memory and quick flow of thought (to say nothing of the abundant ambition inherent in this sign), the Aries child normally excels in scholastics. However, this little one is high-strung and will expend much energy in trying to accomplish too many things at the same time. Thus, a great deal of sleep at regular intervals will be most beneficial to this child. Restless and inquisitive, the Aries child is seldom content with any one thing for a great length of time. It is important that the plans of this little one not be interferred with, since such interference will often cause him or her to lose all interest in the task at hand. The Aries girl will be full of verve and something of a live wire. With an abundance of energy to burn, she tends to attract many admirers. There is a fiercely independent streak here and any girl governed by this Sign will chart her own course. It would not be unusual to find the Aries girl adopting a leadership role at school and, since this Zodiac Sign rules the head and face, she will always be extremely particular about her make-up. It Stops Here

This is the first time I've been 'tagged'. Reading one of her last posts on keira-anne.com, I had been requested to reveal six of my quirks or habits. Seeing as I have virtually no one on my blogroll, the tagging stops here. So here goes...

1. I always have to eat my Chinese food with chopsticks....never ever cutlery. I even have a special bowl and sticks at home.

2. I can never listen to a new CD in the presence of someone else. I crack the case and always play it in my car...loud.

3. My morning ritual is always the same and in the same order every day.

4. I can't seem to stop giving advice....thanks, tips ;)

5. I carry my camera with me every day and if I forget it, I worry that I will miss a 'good' shot.

6. I can't leave the house without putting my 'face' on...even to take away the recycles.

In Praise Of The Younger Man

Charley had a date the other day...with a much younger fellow. What a lucky girl. At first they eyed each other a little warily, sniffed around and she tried to ignore him. He was persistent but then after all he's only nine weeks old. He wouldn't let up. I think he liked her or he just needed someone to play with. We took them on their first play date into the woods, down a winding path covered in leaves through a deep forest near a rushing river. By the time we finished the walk Charley was starting to come around. Maybe this young guy wasn't so bad after all.

A couple days later they went on another date. This time it was to the beach on a blustery Tuesday. This was the first time Charley was let off leash at the beach and it won't be the last. She really surprised me with her obedience and the joy she showed at being able to frolic with her new buddy.

Lex is a German Shepherd and before long he'll be four times the size of Charley. He is already demonstrating his intelligence in his behaviour and attitude. Being a puppy and so playful did finally irritate Charley and she snapped at him a couple times...but then every male needs to know his place!

Today is just the start of many visits between these two sweethearts. I think they'll become fast and furious friends. Charley is such a little tease...a kiss on the second date...shame!

The Constant

Fifty odd years ago two sisters were born...eleven months apart. One was fair and looked like her mother and one was dark and looked like her father. They grew up in the NWT and had a very close family. Throughout the years they celebrated many birthdays.

The birthday parties were always combined into one right in between the two actual birthdays. They always had a bunch of friends at the party and always at least two cakes and or cupcakes. Mother always made it such a formal affair with her best (only) china and a lacy tablecloth.

They spent a lot of time together as a family, camping, fishing, hiking and going for many picnics. Much of the time they had the same friends and spent endless hours hanging around with them.

As they grew older they maintained their closeness for the most part. Typical teenage garbage came between them on occasion and they had quite the fights...emotional and physical. They always made up.

When they finished school, they took a European holiday together. For two months they traipsed through a number of countries...and what a time they had!

Throughout the next twenty-five years they lived their separate lives but were never further away than the phone. Always there for each other through thick and thin until circumstances brought them together again into the same household. Now they again celebrate their birthdays together but with one difference...two dinners and two cakes on the actual birthday!

Another birthday has gone by for both of us and I am so happy that she has been the constant in my life for over fifty years...and I hope for many more to come.

Two Down

I just realized that it has been slightly over two years since I started blogging. When I originally published my first post (http://tempestkat.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html) I never expected to blog for such a long time. My purpose was to post for my family and that still stands. I do have the odd person reading my sporadic blog posts and the odd comment here and there but that is not what my blog is about. My children live far away and it is just an added bonus for them besides our phone conversations, online chats and the occasional email. This blog will remain in the same format...personal...and if you should come across and read it...so be it. I don't mind sharing a bit of my life with you.

Catch My Breath

The moment Thanksgiving was over I started house sitting for a couple of weeks. Besides working full time, fighting a cold, trips to physio, I have not done much except for catching my favorite TV shows and watching a few movies. When you have a 52" flat screen, blue ray disc player and surround sound system at your disposal, you have to take full advantage.

Seeing as I have another week left here, I already have a few more on my agenda. Hidalgo (need a Viggo fix) and I would like to rent The Stone Angel. I read the book way back in the seventies and remember loving it. Anybody have any suggestions on something worth watching...and it doesn't have to be mainstream. I love an epic period piece and subtitles don't scare me!

September Closes

The last day of September proves to be a glorious sunny and warm day. Charley and I frolicked out in the back yard on and off the whole day.

She loves to roll around lately whether it be in the grass, dirt or the carpet. Needless to say bath time has come about more often.

This year I am amazed at how long it is taking for the season to change. The trees are now just starting to turn .

Not long from now the yard will be covered with fallen leaves, a golden carpet.

Charley will soon be experiencing her second winter and will wonder why she's stuck inside so often. In the meantime we'll get out as often as possible but October has brought on the rain and cold and our first frost. At least with her around we always have a ray of sunshine!

Sunshine On My Shoulder (and shopping!) Makes Me Happy

Vancouver here I come!

A short two hour flight and we descended down to the runway in Vancouver. My chariot awaited me at the front entrance of the terminal. The top was down and we drove into the city. Another sunshiny day! We dropped off my gear and we headed to Granville Island with Jen.

A bit of shopping, a quick dinner of pizza at Olympia and a disappointing trip to Marble Slab rounded out the day. We took in a couple episodes of SATC before bedtime.

Monday brought another city shopping/photo walk day. After joining Susan and Keira for a scrumptious sushi lunch, I hit the mall and Robson. That evening we Skytrained it to New Westminster for Greek food with friends celebrating dual birthdays.

The last day in Vancouver took us to Metrotown...shopping again. What else is there for two ladies in the city to do!?

None Left

Trevor is expecting...

Well... I have used up my last week of holidays for the year. I can't fathom the thought of no more until the spring of next year. Thank goodness that Keira will be coming home for a lot of long weekends in between that time. That will feel like a bunch of mini holidays!

On September ninth I flew out of Comox Airport up to Dawson Creek. Trevor and Laura were waiting for me with huge smiles. It felt so good hugging them both. Five months of not seeing my boy is torture. Dawson Creek area is not at all what I imagined it would be like.

I never expected gently rolling hills, fields of farm land and such open spaces. I had thought thick forests of short coniferous trees with a small town nestled amongst. Hardly any conifers...stands of birch trees, shrubs and fireweed. Dawson Creek itself is wide spread with retail buildings spaced far apart. Not really a walking shoppers paradise. They have every business that we have in the Comox Valley...plus one that I had thought had died a death a long time ago! Can you imagine...Robin's Donuts! That's a double double for Trev every day.

I only spent a few days there but we managed to pack quite a few things into it. Trevor took me up to his work yard, showed me his truck and introduced me to his boss. He then took me for a drive around the area and down the Alaska Highway.

Costco and searching for the elusive maternity shop. Yes...you heard me right...I'm going to be a grandma. It wasn't until we heading back to Dawson that we spotted a shop and Laura came home with some lovely maternity clothes. As you can see Trevor wanted a new top as well!

We spent another day wondering the streets of Dawson, lunch at their favorite spot, Hug a Mug. Nice little deli with good food. We took the opportunity to do a bit of a photo shoot at some of the obligatory tourist spots. The Alaska Cafe, Mile 0 marker and the art Gallery to name a few.

One evening was spent with Laura's mom and sister celebrating Trev's belated birthday. Extreme Chocolate blizzard cake...decadent!

Another evening was spent watching Braveheart. We've seen it so many times but still remains a favorite. Seems like they like to watch old sitcoms...Seinfeld especially.

On the last day, Laura, who is suffering from morning sickness and fatigue, stayed in bed and Trev took me to the airport. On our way we stopped for Robin's coffee and headed to Peace Park with the camera and spent a little one on one time.

Dawson...Here I come!

In a little over two hours I am hopping a plane out of Comox and heading to Dawson Creek to see my two sweethearts. I can't wait to touchdown later this afternoon and give and receive a couple of big hugs! Of course I have camera in hand so expect a few photos later next week.

Goats On The Roof

Last weekend a friend and I took a little road trip down to Coombs. I try to visit this tiny community at least once every couple years. Only 45 minutes away from home and you can have an afternoon strolling in the sunshine and taking in all the tourist sites. Coombs has the most unbelievable country market. The shop has a grass roof with storybook huts nestled at the peek and occupied by goats. Inside you will find the most amazing bakery, imported and local foods, an ice cream bar that is always crowded and an odds and ends shop of assorted Asian products.
Not far is a strip of shops geared for the tourists from clothing to pottery, jewelery to mystic stones and Chinese furniture to local produce market. The courtyard is filled with massive granite statues. Usually there is someone playing some sort of music with their instrument case open.
There is even a shop catering to the pleasures of British Colombia's #1 crop. From hemp clothing, cookbooks, rolling papers, bongs and almost anything you can think of related to it.
I was lucky enough to have one of the goats come right to the edge of the roof and she stood around posing for all the photographers!
We had a wonderful afternoon wandering the streets, people watching, eating waffle cone ice creams and coming home with a couple boxes of delightful products. Click through to the links and find out more about this quaint little place.

A Walk In The Park

The Filberg Festival takes place every B.C. Day long weekend on a beautiful nine acre waterfront park in Comox British Columbia. The acreage and Filberg Lodge is a designated heritage site. Over 120 artists partake in the festival, from painters, potters, jewelers, toy makers, quilters and milliners. Usually you can count on a few returning artisans and they bring in their loyal shoppers. As well as the many booths peppering the park, there is a designated food area with everything from Chinese, Greek, Vietnamese, Mexican to Hungarian dishes to sample. Bear paw donuts, moose tracks ice cream, mango on a stick, monkey tails and so much more! Fresh squeezed lemonade, burgers, smokies, donairs and even a sit down outdoor cafe serving ice cold beer. There is something for everyone!The kids have their own entertainment from the lego play area, face painting, craft workshops to Meeks Family Circus and a petting zoo that included pigs, goats and a donkey. I saw many happy children among the crowd!

Two stages on opposite ends of the park are active with performers for the whole of the four day festival. The lineup of musicians and entertainers is impressive. Past performers included Bruce Cockburn, Barney Bentall and Sylvia Tyson. This year they brought in Spirit of the West and Murray Mclauchlan and a dozen or so more. A perfect chance to see our fine Canadian artists!

The day starts at 11:00am and ends around 8:00pm. That give you a good 9 hours to wander nine acres, enjoy the ongoing entertainment, eat an abundance of food, shop to your heart's content and view the gorgeous vistas throughout the park. So what do you think that's worth?

This weekend the Comox Valley Cruisers held their annual Graffiti Bash, this time taking over Courtenay's main street and a couple side streets. Classic cars, hot rods, concept cars and even motorcycles lined the streets for us to peruse. Well up to three hundred vehicles from all over the island and afar participated.The Comox Valley Cruisers are a local organization which meet on a regular basis, usually at the local A&W ( how appropriate is that!) and are involved in helping many charitable groups including Yana and the Food Bank.

I am not much for cars and such but this is the second such event which I took in. One of my friends is a cruiser and owns two vehicles....RSS67 Camero and a 1929 Essex Roadster. She participates in showing her cars as well as volunteering in the event.
Even I can appreciate the beauty, the lines, the chrome, the vibrant colors, the old time rock and roll blasting through the streets....

...and for some reason it brings out all the men!

Three days in a row Charley and I have hit the beach. I just have to say the word and she up and heading to the door. Today was ninety minutes of beach combing, splashing, wading and of course a photo shoot.
Her first time actually walking in water up to her knees...and she sat down in a pool of water. So much for her bath last night.
Miracle Beach has a separate beach access for dogs and attached to that is a dog walk that meanders through the bush...across a few little bridges and sand dunes.
Never at a loss for new scents and little crawlies. The tide was out a fair distance. We immediately wandered to the ocean's edge and came across at least eight herons. There is an estuary in the area which next time we will explore.

I think both Charley and I are beach bums in training!

Ticket To Paradise

Sometimes we take things for granted. I have lived on this island for forty years and to me it's home. At times I don't even look at what is staring me in the face...the absolute stunning beauty all around me.
I literally live no more than five minutes away from two gorgeous beaches, Seal Bay Regional Nature Park and Kitty Coleman Provincial Park. These past two days I took the time to go out and appreciate both of them.
Naturally the camera and Charley came with me. My sister also joined in for our nature walk today. The trail down to the beach was canopied by towering evergreens and blanketed on the sides by a carpet of lush green ferns. The sky was slightly overcast and kept the hot sun at bay.

Coleman Beach last night was fairly calm with the waves gently lapping the shore. The smell of campfires in the air made me nostalgic of our many summers camping on Hornby Island. I want to go camping so bad!
Charley as always thoroughly enjoyed herself. She loves nothing better now than walks with me, whether it's around the loop or special trips to the Air Park or nearby beaches. The ocean smells entice her. Her nose is continually on the ground.

I have another 'Beach Day' planned for tomorrow. We are going yet to another one nearby...Miracle Beach which again is only a little more than a ten minute drive away...the two of us and a picnic lunch!

Looking Back

It seems a lifetime ago when these pictures were taken. I can barely remember how it felt to be in my late teens with all the angst, insecurities, doubt and fears about the future. I can, although remember some of the goals I had wanted to accomplish.

I had a flare for art and thought that I would have loved to become a fashion designer. I drew endless pictures of the human body clad in my wonderful designs. I even entered an art contest advertised in a magazine. Little did I know that it was a marketing ploy to sign up students for a correspondence art school. I rarely pick up a charcoal and sketch pad anymore.
I also remember dreaming about the ultimate trip...a safari in Kenya and a visit to the outback of Australia. This must have come from my love of watching Untamed World. I never did take either of those trips...I do however enjoy my armchair trips on the Discovery Channel. I have been lucky enough to see a bit of the world...Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. I haven't seen enough of Canada and only a wee corner of the USA. Yellowstone National Park was breathtaking.Many weekends were spent wondering through my uncle's back property ...day dreaming. My dream was to live in a cabin by a lake, a dock to moor the boat, mountains in the distance, rocking chair on the porch and the loons calling in the early evening. As of yet, I have not had any place to truly call my own. Maybe I don't really need to because in reality home is were the heart is.
As young teenagers we all have hopes, dreams and wishes and if we knew then what we know now...maybe some of them may have come true. Our priorities change and hence our goals and wishes. We can never stop having those dreams. They are what keep us going every day. I now have a whole new set of dreams....maybe someday I will share them with you as well.

The Week That Was

Keira and I at Crown Isle Resort. Beautiful weather, gorgeous patio view, mediocre food and atrocious service. We won't be going there again.
Family walk around the loop. I am so proud of Charley. She is getting so much better when meeting up with the neighbourhood dogs.

She loves her walks and usually marches along right beside me.

Charley spends a lot of time snoozing. Her favourite spot is now outside on the new patio, in the shade. The quiet backyard, a few birds chirping, hummingbirds flitting and a cool cement pad...heaven.

Look at that glorious sky and snow capped mountains! We wanted summer and it's finally here! I still have another two days off and intend to relish every moment.
Here I go again with those flower shots....sorry.
First try on a new setting on the camera. I really need to spend some time to figure out all that it can do but taking photographs is getting in the way.
Evening sun filtering through the trees. The days are longer and warmer. We are spending more time out on the patio. We've had our first real BBQ, the start of many more to come. I think I will hit the beach or do the Seal Bay walk...or just lay about the back deck.

Summer is slowly showing it's face in the Valley. Charley and I have been taking walks around our 'loop' as often as weather permits. She is finally enjoying herself and not getting too anxious when we come across other dogs being walked or aggressive barking from neighbourhood dogs as we pass by. She loves snuffling around the ditches!We purchased new patio furniture in anticipation of hot summer evenings sitting in the back enjoying a steak dinner and a glass of wine. Not your traditional table, chairs and umbrella but a deep seated set with coffee table. Your spot is waiting Keira!
Flowers are blooming abundantly all over the place including our yard.

Every few days something else is unfurling. My camera is working overtime. Just as my father before me, I am taking great enjoyment in capturing

the joys of nature albeit for my own pleasure.The other day I was looking for a certain recipe in my collection journal and came across a page in which my son scribbled a few words oh so long ago. At the time I was upset that he had marked up my recipe book but a few seconds later saw the humour in it and left it as is. As I saw that little sentence it brought forward again how much I miss having him around.
As Keira can attest, he was a little shit disturber and always clowning around. Hamming it up for the camera, playing practical jokes which he thought

were hilarious and generally just being a rambuncous boy.

And guess what, he still can be a little shit disturber, still jokes around, hams it up for the camera and is still my rambuncous boy. I wish he lived closer.
My friend Linda recently got back from a trip to the Maritimes and brought me back a very pretty simple ring from Newfoundland. Labradorite is a power stone, allowing you to see through illusions and determine the actual form of your dreams and goals. It is excellent for strengthening intuitions. Still hasn't worked though...or maybe it has!
Today was my last day on the maintenance program of Weight Watchers. I have reached my goal and have maintained it for six weeks. I am now a Lifetime Member with the priviledge of going free from now on for weigh ins and meetings. I still intend to loose a further ten pounds and then will be at my desired weight. I will post a few before and after pics in the near future. My intention is to be 'average' and boy has it been a long time since that was so. Now I suppose that since I have worked on my body....it's time to concentrate on mind and soul.

The past month has been a busy one. The summer type festivities have begun. A beautiful weekend spent at an outdoor art festival surrounded by stunning gardens and in the company of my lovely daughter and a sweet pup. A delicious dinner on an outdoor patio with my family in the glorious sunshine. A week in Vancouver visiting and taking in the sites of Gastown and area, birthday party, dinner at Boneta, shopping and relaxing with Keira and two little doggies.

House sitting for a week was almost like another mini holiday. Visiting a dear old friend, dinner out, and playing catch up again. Walks with Charley, camera in hand, clicking away. I am so looking forward for summer when hopefully the weather warms up. I have weekends planned with family, picnics, beach walks, exploring new territory and meeting new friends and old. If only work didn't get in the way!

Evenings on the patio, bbq's, sipping a nice merlot, what else could anyone ask for?

Water's Edge

We have a dog who is scared of everything...other people, other dogs, passing cars and sudden noises. You'd think she had some sort of traumatic event in her young life. Numerous times I have tried walking her along our street and by the time we reach the property line she's tugging me back home. All it takes is bark from another dog ahead, a car coming down the road or just realizing she's not on home turf.

Last weekend had the perfect Sunday with the sun shining and almost the feel of spring in the air. I plunked Charley in my car and took her to the beach. She was skittish and nervous and panicked when we came across people walking or other dogs. She would not go near the water. We spent almost forty five minutes walking and wandering. She was happy to get into the car and go home. We did the same thing the next day. Same results.

Yesterday I took her out again in the rain. The wind was blowing and waves were crashing. We spent maybe twenty minutes and the tug to the car cut our outing short.

Today I asked her if she wanted to go to the beach. She started prancing around, headed to the front door, pawing to get out. I opened the car door and she jumped in with no coaxing. She sat in her seat looking out the window. When we arrived at the beach she preceded me out, took one listen to the crashing waves and jumped back in. I had to drag her out. Well....by the time we left we were walking five feet from the waves with no tugging, she snuffled around the campsites, climbed the logs and I think, finally enjoyed herself. We are going again on my next day off!

I have always loved to look at pictures...ever since I was a little girl.

My father was an avid photographer of both wildlife and nature as well as the 'wildlife' at home. Needless to say we have boxes upon boxes of pictures, photo albums galore and reels and reels of home movies. It was always a big production when the Zeiss Icon came out and we had to wait for what seemed like hours for him to adjust the light meter...then the posing would begin. Living up in the north without TV had it's good points. We always looked forward to movie night. His projector would be working overtime entertaining the whole family. Granted, Anne and I complained when the 'nature' films were shown....how boring watching a silent bird sitting in a tree or a flower swaying gently in a breeze. We wanted the good stuff...camping film, us children hamming it up for the camera and mom looking so prim and proper...all without sound. It was devastating when the projector light bulb blew (and Dad didn't have an extra one) or when the film strip snapped and he had to spend the time to splice it before we could finish watching. As we grew older we watched them less and less. The last time I watched these movies was thirteen years ago...a week before my mother died. I think it was for a reason that we choose that particular time to gather the whole family, including my children to watch for what would be the last time. My mother had a chance to see her family life on film before she left us.

Over the years I have flipped through all the photo albums endless times...not only the ones which my father put together but the ones I have made of my own family. I have gone through the boxes time and again enjoying our lives on Kodak paper. A few years ago I sorted my boxes of photos and put together one each for my children. They are put into keepsake boxes for each to take into their own homes. Eventually they will inherit the photographic history of our family which my father so lovingly spent countless hours preserving.

I have often wondered what his reaction would be to the digital camera, photo sharing sites, the ability to edit, crop, discard with a touch of a button. I'd like to believe he would have embraced the concept and ran with it. He would have had a Flickr account and proudly displayed his work for the world to see. He would have loved to spend hours clicking from one photo site to the next admiring your photos as I do. Yes...that's me checking out your photos, counted as one of your 'viewed' numbers...after all, I've always loved to look at pictures.

Free Food!

So...not really free food in the context that you think. I am talking about the foods that are free to eat to your hearts content while on the Weight Watcher Points program...within reason of course! Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. They are full of fibre, water, vitamins and minerals and add bulk to your meals with few calories. A serving of fruit or vegetable is 1/2 cup except for leafy greens which are 1 cup. Most of all the vegetables have a Points value of 0 for each cup, including asparagus, cabbage, cucumbers, celery, green beans, peppers, and the list goes on. I always make sure I 'fill' up my meal with vegetables. Fresh veggies make for a great snack....keep some cleaned, sliced and ready for munching. I make a vegetable soup every week to keep on hand for meals, lunches or snacks. Each week is a slight variation depending on my current craving.

I will be posting some healthy recipes in the weeks to come. They will all be my own variations of common healthy recipes with will help promote weight loss with this program.

Vegetable Soup #1

In a large pot, spray with non stick cooking spray and saute

1 large onion sliced in rings

3 large carrots sliced

2 garlic cloves crushed

3 large celery sliced

Add at least 3-5 cups chicken bouillon

1 can green beans with liquid

2 cups of broccoli florets or cauliflower

2 tbsp ketchup

2 tbsp parsley

Simmer until veggies are done. Add salt or pepper if needed and enjoy.

Vegetable Soup #2

In a large pot, spray with non stick cooking spray and saute

1 large onion sliced in rings

3 large carrots sliced

2 garlic cloves crushed

Add 1 large can of crushed tomatoes

1 small head cabbage shredded

2-3 cups beef bouillon

pinch of oregano

Simmer until the cabbage is cooked, add more water if necessary and beef bouillon powder or salt and pepper to adjust the taste. The flavour is reminiscent of cabbage rolls.

As with most home inspired recipes...the quantities are a bit of this and a bit of that...never usually the same everytime. You can add and adjust how you like it, use up vegetables you have on hand and spice it up with the herbs you enjoy.

To make your large bowl of soup a meal....add 3 or 4 oz. of cooked chicken or turkey to #1 and 3 or 4 oz. of cooked extra lean ground beef to #2.

"Turnaround"

On June 7th, 2007 I rejoined Weight Watchers after a long long hiatus. The previous time I was a member must have been over 15 years ago. At that time I never did reach goal or become a lifetime member. Back in August I posted on my commitment to finish what I started. At that time I had lost about 20 pounds. Well...I am still on the program and now am about 3 pounds away from goal. That will then be a loss of thirty! I must say the last ten pounds have been very difficult. Over Christmas I had gained back about four which I worked on diligently to get off again. It was more realistic of me to choose the high end of my goal range considering my age and lifestyle. I am so looking forward to reaching it and will be so proud to be a Lifetime Member!
Over the years I had tried so many diets...the coffee and cigarette one, Atkins, South Beach, the exchange program, and a few others. They all worked for a while but you can't sustain that forever. I needed one that let me eat everything that I wanted and guess what...that's Weight Watchers. At first I thought the 'points' plan was a bunch of crap. How can someone loose weight on a plan that counts points and not calories? How can someone be disciplined enough to eat the right things and not use all those points up on junk? It is definitely easy and more efficient than I thought. Following the plan not only promotes weight loss but a new healthier way of eating. There are only four little rules to follow...
1. Stick to your Points budget
2. Keep track of the Points values on everthing you eat and drink
3. Pay attention to portion sizes
4. Follow the Good Health Guidelines
All the tools you need are supplied, meetings are included (and full of helpful hints and support) and you can also include the online program if you like. I will not get into the details of the program but just want to pass on my enthusiasum and willingness to support Weight Watchers as a company. Ultimately it is up to us as individuals to continue with the tools we have been given to continue in keeping the weight off.
Stop Dieting. Start Living.
Weight Watchers is not a diet because it helps you eat right and live healthy. It works because it helps you learn to lose weight and keep it off, in a way that fits your life.

Down The Road

We are now well into the new year. The tree is down, the decorations put away and all the 'good' food is out of the house. My goal over the holidays was to maintain my weight...but alas...the festive five arrived. I have worked diligently on getting back on track and have lost 2.6 of shortbread/turkey/cheese. :) On Monday it's back to the gym. I am actually looking forward to it and hope my bum hip doesn't give me trouble. I have decided that I will not have any new year resolutions. Nothing new will be introduced to my world. I will continue with the 'program' that I put into motion last year. If all goes as plan...I will be at goal by the end of April. Then another phase will take over.
Keira blogged about the puzzle of life and I believe she hit the nail on the head. I can see the whole picture in my mind and looking closer I see all the individual pieces that it is taking to make it whole. I still have to find a lot of them to work on completing my puzzle.
I think I'll need to spend some more 'me' time this year and partake in some of the activities that I have let slip. A Christmas gift this year was a new set of paints, canvas and sketch book. I received a new novel I have waited for and a portable DVD to catch up on all the movies I have wanted to see. I have a sewing project to complete before next December. I have beaches to explore with Charley, photographs to take, new health foods to sample, a whale watching tour, shopping in the States, a clean sweep to complete and maybe even a trip north.
I have also thought maybe I should devote some more time blogging...how about throwing in a healthy recipe or tip every once in a while. Maybe a review here and there, a rant or two...we'll see.

So...it's that whirlwind time of year again. December always starts off with Keira's birthday. This year she came home a week early to celebrate with her mom. Her actual birthday was a gathering of close friends and good times in Vancouver. Tradition dictates the Christmas decorating and tree trimming happens in conjunction with her birthday. That way we have the spirit of Christmas for a whole month. This year the twinkling of lights occurred a week early! The tree looks amazing...what a wonderful job she did! I am so happy to hand those reins to her. Maybe next year she can do the lights too. I wish...but then it has always been my job.

I am working at packing a box of gifts to ship up to Trevor and Laura in Dawson. Unfortunately they won't be home for the holidays. This will be the first year without my boy to hug and watch the joy as he opens his gifts. My heart is sad. The two of them will have to start their own traditions in their new life together. I wish...next year they can join us again.

Once that is behind me, I can concentrate on finishing my shopping for Keira and Anne as well as a couple of close friends. Menus to be planned, baking to be done and a few evenings of wrapping...and before you know it...Keira will be home again to help with the last minute things. She plans to bake her scrumptious spice cookies and I will do my shortbread...that's it. Being on Weight Watchers, I insist on keeping most of the temptations out of the house. My goal is to at least maintain the weight I lost, not gain any and if I'm really lucky...loose a couple over the holidays. I wish!

The Christmas season in our household has changed dramatically over the years. I miss the days when the whole family gathered for Christmas Eve dinner and then again on Christmas Day. What was a gathering of ten or more has dwindled down to four...this year only three. Now we have close friends join our family for the holidays.

I am more than happy to have my children take over traditions and start some new ones of their own. Maybe the day will come when the house will be filled again with the laughter and joy of young children on Christmas morning.....I wish.

Northwest Coast Artist

Last week I ventured to my twice yearly visit the the Ihos Gallery on the Dyke Road between Courtenay and Comox. Situated on the reserve, the gallery showcases both traditional and contemporary northwest coast native arts and crafts. Gold and silver jewelry, wood carvings, masks, prints and many other assorted items are displayed. As I browsed looking for gift ideas, I came across some prints that immediately struck me. They were bold, colorful and unique with both a traditional and modern twist. I noticed that they were all done by Andy Everson. As I made my way through the store I saw that art cards were also available by the same artist, then calendars and even a book. I took the time to read a mini bio on the back of an art card and found out that this young man was local...right here from the reserve. Spring's Finale

Andy Everson was born in Comox in 1972. He was named Nagedzi after his grandfather, the late Chief Andy Frank who I had the pleasure to meet in the 1970's. Andy has a Masters Degree in Anthropology, can sing traditional songs, perform ceremonial dances, and has formed a company that specializes in Aboriginal language CD-Roms. He has been creating his artwork since the early nineties.

A new coffee table book has just been released by Bob Mersereau. It's a compilation of the top 100 Canadian albums of the last 50 years. He had polled about 600 people consisting of mostly musicians, retailers, journalists and DJ's, his results based on their top ten list. I thought maybe it's because there are so many Canadian artists missing from this list that I am a little disappointed in the results. With such a limited cross section of Canadians polled, it really doesn't show a true reflection. Then I realized it didn't really matter anyway. It was just another list and every one of us would have a different list. Canada has always had talented musicians and I support every one of them....don't have to like the music. Our musicians give the people what they want, something for everyone. Throughout the years I have purchased many albums, cassettes, CD's by our local artists. As in this list, Neil Young is the top of my list from the first record I bought in the 1970's...After the Goldrush. (I coveted the patchwork jeans on the back cover). Tom Cochrane, Tragically Hip, Loverboy, Bryan Adams, Bruce Cockburn...and the list goes on have graced my shelves over the years. Some of the albums are long gone but many replaced by Cd's because I can not go without. Lately I have been introduced to new artists and appreciate the additions to my music collection. (it helps having children who make great suggestions!) I will always continue to support Canadian musicians by purchasing their albums. The next one on my wish list is Chrome Dreams II...so Neil...keep on rocking.

Morning Has Broken

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning...Day 3 starts this morning and what a nice surprise to see the sun! Yesterday was clouded over with a few periods of rain. Actually it was not even spitting...more like misting. Funny how the folks in the city snap open those umbrellas at the slightest hint of percipitation.
I spend the day on no particular agenda...everything on my own time. Grocery shopping was the only thing on my list. What I love about downtown living is the fact that you have nearly every type of store within walking distance. I went to Cobs bakery for a loaf of Cape Seed bread, Kins Farm market for veggies and fruit and then Safeway for fish, beef and non perishables. I still can't get over the low price of fresh veggies at a small market compared to the grocery store.
Keira came home from work and we spent the evening watching a movie after a lovely dinner of Beef Fajitas. I am not a fan of Lindsay Lohan or even Jane Fonda but the movie "Georgia Rule' was actually quite good. Not the piece of fluff I expected.
Today is WW weigh in at the church next to Keira's office, lunch with her, an afternoon of shopping on Robson and then dinner with Rebecca, John and maybe Duane. I am looking forward to meeting them. Later this evening...another movie?

Died in the Shootout

Yesterday was day one of my week's holiday. Anne and Charley drove me to town to catch the Island Link to Vancouver. Bags in tow, I finally arrived in Vancouver shortly after 3:00PM. I was the only person on the shuttle and he was kind enough to drop me off at Keira's office. We hopped a taxi home, quickly changed and headed to Wings. Such a treat. Not only did we have the pleasure of Brock's company, we ate 3 pounds of wings between the three of us. Louisiana Sweet, Greek and Honey Garlic. Yummy. Brock had to rush off to class. Keira and I headed to what I thought was going to be a movie at Tinseltown. She sure had me fooled. She took me to a Vancouver Canucks game at GM Place. They played the San Jose Sharks. It has been over twenty years since I had seen a Canucks game. The last one was at the Coliseum's and I have no memory of that one. The bleachers were packed, the beer was cold, the music rocked and in spite of my neutral attitude towards hockey, I thoroughly enjoyed myself! I dislike watching hockey on TV for no other reason than I can't stand hearing the commentary during the game. Seeing a game live is a different kettle of fish all together. I love the silence as you watch the game, anticipating the choice of music during face-off, the crowd enthusiasm, the lights, and the whole atmosphere. Yes...if given a chance, I will gladly go to another game. Thank you, Keira!

Nothing But A Croc

Now I've seen everything!
The shoe that started out as a 'garden' shoe has become a North American phenomenon. So many different styles for men women and children in an array of colors. Pink, lavender, khaki, camo, baby blue and everything under the rainbow. From ballet, all terrain, mary jane, wedge, off road, beach, boots, sandals and work shoes in an 'orthodic footbed of ergononmic italian styling'.
You know...these wouldn't be so bad except when you see someone dressed in a decent outfit, schlepping their feet encased in orange dollar store plastic shoes.
Still...unless I moved to Hornby Island, you won't see these on my feet!

Hauling Ass

Around 4:00PM today, Trevor and Laura pulled into the parking lot at work to come and say good-bye. Many hugs and kisses later, they left a tearful mother watch them drive away. They arrived in Nanaimo to spend a last evening with friends before heading to the mainland for the long trek north. Truck filled to the brim and a U-haul stuffed with furniture, they are on their way to start a new life together in Dawson Creek. I wish them a safe journey and a happy contented life together. I love you so much, Trevor. Take care of yourself and Laura. XXXOOO

Added bonus in the weight loss journey....my last Doctor's appointment turned out to be very encouraging. My average blood sugar has dropped right into the acceptable range, my good and bad cholestral is in range, my overall cholestral is good and my blood pressure was down. I had a very happy doctor which made me a very happy lady!

How disheartening is it when you finally realize that for the whole of your life you have been fighting the battle of the bulge. Ever since I was a young girl growing up in the N.W.T. I have had a problem with weight. I was always the fat one...not terribly obese but enough that one of my nicknames was 'Lotta'. For those who don't know...Big Lotta was a chunky character in a comic book. My parents did nothing to discourage my eating habits as they were of the old school. They grew up without and probably felt that their children were not going to suffer the same fate. I remember as a teenager always feeling self-conscious of those few extra pounds. In retrospect, I suppose I really wasn't really that overweight. I did have my share of dates and a marriage.

I maintained a fairly decent weight until my first child. I gained fify pounds and surpassed a milestone in numbers. I never did loose all that I had gained before my second child rocketed me back to the same place.

So...now we come to the next twenty five years of on and off dieting. A bout with Weight Watchers in which I gave up shortly before reaching my goal, the slow climb up again, dieting again, gaining, and the vicious circle continued. Then the unthinkable.

My lifestyle of overeating gave me Diabetes as a prize. I had to loose weight to help control my blood sugars. I now had a disease in which your every waking thought was about food...what can you eat, what can't you eat, how much, what's taboo...and this was for the rest of my life. I was overwhelmed and upset. Maybe part of the problem was the denial and I ate with no regard to my health. I didn't loose the weight. Ten years ago, stress in my life threw my blood sugar readings all over the map and I lost weight rapidly, reaching my goal finally. Not exactly the way to loose. At that time I had decided this was the end of ever having to diet. Now that I was at my ideal weight I would never again let it run away on me.

Wrong! The weight crept up again...reaching that horrible milestone again. Then comes The Atkins Diet, The South Beach Diet, going to the gym, a combo of all and no results in the weight loose department. So now you have it....my lifetime of struggle which takes me to today.

Ten weeks ago I made another commitment and joined Weight Watchers. This was a proven method in the past and even though I knew the program to do on my own, I knew I needed the accountability of the weekly trip to the scales and the meeting. This time around I know it is probably my last chance at making lasting change. As I get older, it's harder and harder to loose weight and the next time around my skin won't bounce back to a reasonable appearance. So far I have lost a total of twenty pounds and have another fourteen in order to reach my goal. After that will be six weeks of maintenance and then I will become a Lifetime Member. A Lifetime Member gets to go to the meeting FREE as long as they attend once a month and not exceed more than two pounds over goal weight. As an added bonus, my blood sugars are easier to keep in the normal range and I have reduced the amount of insulin I inject by half.

I feel happy, positive that I am not only doing this for the reflection in the mirror but for my health and well being. Sometimes I wonder if this time around will be any different.
In my heart of hearts...I know it will.
